What causes chest wrinkles?
Chest wrinkles can be caused by a number of factors. Sundamaged skin is the number one cause, actually 90% of aging skin is caused by cumulative sun exposure to UV rays, primarily the UVA rays (or the aging rays). Once the skin is damaged by the sun collagen is destroyed and the skin loses its elasticity. Also when the skin is exposed to UV rays it increases free radical activity, free radicals damage the cells and in turn the cells are no longer functioning properly.
Secondly it is our sleeping position. Sounds weird doesn’t it? Think of it like this. We spend approx 7-8 hours every night sleeping in a certain position in bed. Most women to whom I have spoken to tend to sleep on their side, this is the position most likely to cause chest wrinkles. As we sleep on our side our skin creases (especially for those of us who have larger breasts), and to add to this, if the skin has been damaged by the UV rays and has lost its collagen support system and elasticity the creased skin cannot ” spring” back into place easily – as it does when we are young and the skin has not been exposed to the sun.
So really there are two main causes of chest wrinkles – sundamaged and aging skin, and your sleeping position.
Which treatments actually work?
We are not spoilt for choice with regards to treatments that work. There are many treatments available, but how many give the results you want and will maintain that result for you too? Well you can try things like laser & botox, however, even though a laser treatment will stimulate the collagen and eastin in the skin which over time improves the appearance of the skin, as soon as you go to sleep on your side the wrinkles and creases will return. The same applies to the Botox treatment, Botox will not stop the skin from creasing while you sleep. So what do we do to address this problem with an effective solution? Well common sense tells us that we need to prevent sundamge at all costs by keeping the skin out of the sun, also wearing a good SPF 30 containing anti oxidants, and also keeping the skin from creasing while we sleep. So how do we do this? We need to apply something to the decollette area ( chest area) which prevents the skin from creasing. There are various products out there on offer to us which do this job, but it is about finding the correct one to suit you. There is one product which is like placing a pillow between the breasts which can be a little bulky and difficult to sleep in. There is also a bra which keeps the breasts apart but that is quite unsightly. The most discreet little pad I have found is a medical grade silicone pad which fits discreetly between the breasts onto the decollette area. This is adhesive, washable and reusable and lasts about 60 days depending on how often you use it. I have found that if I do not wish to sleep with the pad on I can apply it to the area in the morning and it will smooth out the lines and winkiles in that area. The Decollette Pad is by far the most effective and comfortable treatment I have personally found for addressing chest wrinkles.
What can we do to make them appear better?
Well once we have chest wrinkles there are a few key pointers to making them look much better so we can comfortably wear those low cut tops and dresses with out worrying that our wrinkles look so apparent – this can really affect our confidence.
1. Stay out of the sun and wear a good SPF30 every day – 50% of the UVA rays can penetrate the cloud, glass and clothing. These are the aging rays which destroy the collagen and elastin in the skin.
2. Sleep on your back or wear a device like the Decollette Pad to stop the skin on the chest area creasing.
3. Apply a little bronzer to the area – a tan always make the skin look much better, just make sure we are faking it ladies.
