How to Use Cucumber As an Acne Treatment

The cucumber is a natural soothing acne treatment, especially for obstinate and particularly hard to treat acne scars and blemishes. Applying cucumber and lemon juice can lighten the skin and minimize the appearance of past acne spots and blemishes. Cucumber juice was regularly used in the 17-18th centuries across Europe, by ladies and gentleman, to lighten the skin before applying enormous quantities of face powders. The effect was, to give the skin a very white and attractive appearance, which highlighted and showed up the very fine blood vessels under the skin. This was regarded in those days, as being a very attractive feature. Interestingly before then, application of face makeup was regarded as the ‘work of the devil’ and so was not openly practised.

Cucumber cleanses the skin, heals and repairs areas of tissue scarred by acne spots. Cucumbers are approximately 90% water and the flesh of the cucumber is almost totally composed of water, but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both helping to reduce skin inflammation and reduce swellings. Caffeic acid is also known for its natural antioxidant properties and so very beneficial for skin problems.

Cucumbers’ tough outer skin is high in fiber and contains some very beneficial salts including silica, potassium and magnesium. The silica in cucumber is an essential component of normal body connective tissues, which comprises of skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone. Cucumber liquid is prescribed as a rich source of silica to improve the skin’ s complexion and health, plus cucumber’s high water content makes it naturally hydrating i.e. putting water into the body tissues. Cucumber as a remedy is also used topically, for various types of skin problems, including puffiness under the eyes and sore sunburn. The two chemicals, in cucumbers, ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, prevent bodily water retention, which might show why cucumbers applied topically, are helpful for swollen eyes, sore burns and acne swellings.

To use, obtain an organically grown, cucumber, dice and put in a blender, add honey and some oats. Then add some yoghurt and blend together well. Then apply to the skin acne areas. The effects of a cucumber face pack can be felt quite quickly, as the skin feels smooth and soft to the touch. A cucumber face pack can help to open up the pores in the skin enabling it to breathe more efficiently. The soothing and cooling effect, of the cucumber, will also leave the skin feeling thoroughly cleansed. The cucumber skin pack is also very effective as a cleanser for other parts of the body, such as chest and back. So please try cucumber as a natural remedy, to help with skin acne and also to rejuvenate tired skin, around the eyes.
