Is Dyshidrotic Eczema Contagious?

Dyshidrotic eczema is a skin disease that causes small blisters as well as inflamed and cracking skin on the surface of the hands or feet. This skin disease is recurring, meaning that it is not something that one is typically affected by only once and flare ups of the condition can re-occur numerous times in the patient’s life. This form of eczema occurs in around 10% of people who have eczema on the hands or feet. It typically affects individuals that are between 5 and 75 years of age, with the median age of sufferers being 39 years. While it is known to occur more frequently in warm climates and during the summer months, this skin disease is present everywhere in the world and can occur during any season.

It should be noted that dyshidrotic eczema is not contagious and will not spread within the human population through simple contact with an infected person. While certain types of skin infections can make it worse, it is not caused by a viral, fungal or bacterial infection. Therefore, systemic or topical antibiotics will have little effect on preventing this skin condition or slowing down its progress. While the disease will not affect the internal organs and will therefore not have any other consequences on the patient’s overall health, severe cases of this form of eczema can result in pain as well as irritation in the affected area.

There are various substances which are sometimes referred to as eczema cures. It should be known that in the case of dyshidrotic eczema, there is no cure that has been recognized by the medical community. Therefore, treatment will be made using a variety of substances in order to determine which ones the patient will respond to the best. While it is usually treated with topical corticosteroid creams, these can have side effects such as thinning out the skin. Therefore, it is best to use more natural treatments that are safer, milder and in many cases more effective.
