Foods That Cause Wrinkles

For so many years, people have been looking for different ways to eliminate wrinkles. However, most people have ignored one of the major culprits that cause wrinkles – unhealthy food. Unknown to many, regularly consuming certain foods such as alcohol, processed snacks and sweets can eventually lead to wrinkles. These foods contain ingredients and nutrients that can cause inflammation and cell damage which can greatly reduce the collagen and elastin of the skin. Collagen and elastin, as we all know are two of the most important elements responsible for making the skin look tight and firm. Here are some of the reasons why you should avoid consuming them.

People who regularly consume high sugar foods such as cakes, ice cream, candies, chocolates and other sweet treats are at risk to have a duller, wrinkled skin than those who consume less sweets. Glycation, a body process which involves the attachment of sugars traveling in the bloodstream to proteins which produces a molecule that damages the collagen and elastin in the skin. So in short, the more sugar you eat, the more collagen and elastin killer molecules are produced by your body. Once these fibers are damaged, they become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. To prevent wrinkles from developing at an early age, try to limit your intake of high sugar foods. I know it is impossible to completely eliminate sugar from our diet but it is very important to choose naturally occurring sugars found in fruits and vegetables. Yes, vegetables have hidden sugars too!

Another culprit that causes wrinkles are processed foods. Processed foods that line up the grocery shelves are stripped of nutrients such as antioxidants, omega 3 and other vital nutrients that the skin needs. As we all know, antioxidants protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals. The best way to keep our skin cells healthy is by limiting or better yet, avoiding processed foods and eating more fresh antioxidant rich foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Excessive alcohol intake can also cause wrinkles as it inflames the skin. When the lives metabolizes alcohol, it creates toxic chemicals such as aldehydes and ketones which can inflame and damage the cells underneath skin. If your skin cells are inflamed constantly then it could definitely speed up the development of wrinkles and other skin aging problems. Apart from that alcohol can also cause capillary leaks which can cause the skin to bloat and sag at the same time.
